Talk about confidence … in 2009 Jose Manuel Pellicer ignored Dakar Rally officials and, despite terrorist threats, raced – and won – the “Africa Race,” run across much of the same Sahara Desert route the then cancelled Dakar Rally was going to run. Blasting through the sand and technical rock terrain for some 7,500 kilometers, Pellicer was crowned the King of North Africa in this loosely sanctioned event, featuring a number of top enduro racers that would not give in to terrorist threats. A motocross racer at heart, Pellicer, like his Monster Energy/Speedbrain teammate Joan Barreda, is a professional pilot.
