Wasabi first started writing electronic music at 13 and became deeply immersed in the science of sound after making his debut onto the live stage professionally at the fresh age of eight, with Brazillian percussion band Bad Boys Batucada, with whom he still plays with to this day, 18 years later. He started out writing breaks and house which progressed to a deeper dnb, break core and industrial style. Hip hop and big beat became the force for a while leading him to start his own label Fortnight Productions, releasing a new album or mixtape every fortnight for 18 releases. Some of the albums are still respected as the best underground albums ever made in Australia.
His first professional dj gig was when he was just 14 with Elf Tranzporter who also still perform together today. He was quickly introduced to scratching and took a break from producing to mastermind his new electronic addiction. Twelve years later and Wasabi is known worldwide as one of Australia’s tightest and most prolific turntabilists.
Wasabi’s much sought after DJ skills have landed him gigs djing for internationals like Kool Kieth and Australia’s highest regarded hip hop acts Ozi Batla (Elefant Tracks), Mantra (Obese Records), Combat Wombat (Elefant Traks) and has just been enlisted by Pegz the godfather of ozhiphop and owner of Obese Records who will be touring together from April this year.
He has supported the biggest international names in hip hop, drum and bass and dubstep including Redman & Method Man, De La Soul, Jean Grae, Promoe, Talib Kwali, Scribe, DJ Craze, Mixmaster Mike, Public Enemy, Arrested Development, Andy C, Dj Marky, Dj Zink, Calyx and so many more over the years.
Since redirecting his focus back to production, he has developed an intelligent bass heavy beat driven style, moving forward into dubstep, glitch, whomp hop, neuro dub and even minimal tech. His debut solo album, due for release in June 2011 has taken Wasabi to a realm of the studio that he’s been scratching at for the last 13 years.
Unraveling the secret tweaks and tricks to produce atmospheric sounds capes with breath and clarity over dynamic wonky beats and liquid bass lines, is setting this album on a completely new path of psychedelic audio vistas compared to his previous work.
After setting up his lab in Melbourne’s most talked about music production house Tetris Studios in 2009, Wasabi has taken off on a whole new level of genius, dissecting frequencies and sounds to recreate the cleanest yet dirty musically diverse tracks well surpassing the international standard.
Wasabi’s credits include an ARIA award, 2 x ABC awards, ‘Cheap Thrills’ DJ Of The Year and is a nominee for best dj in this year’s Ozhiphop Awards. His production and cuts have featured on over a dozen releases over the years including Combat Wombat – Elefant Tracks, Illzilla – Obese Records, Mata & Must, Elf Tranzporter- Shock records , Tarkine International World Music compilation - Inertia, Mantra- Obese records, JJJ International Hip Hop compilation – MGM, Dia Frix- Illusive, Third World, Dub plate, 7” – Chant Down Sound, FFA Crew - Obese records, Mista Savona and Monkey Mark.
Wasabi is also avidly dedicated to youth development and has been running workshops for disadvantaged youth for the past eight years. 2011 is going to be massive for Wasabi with his first ever full length solo release and a Euro tour kicking off in August.
