“2012 AMA Supercross champion” has a nice ring to it – and RV pulled that off by missing pretty much the last three rounds of the season. Villopoto’s 323 points, racked up with wins at Anaheim (Calif.) 1 & 2, San Diego, Dallas and St. Louis were followed up with a late-season four-race run that saw RV solidify the title with wins at Indianapolis, Toronto, Houston and New Orleans. A knee-buckling incident at his hometown Seattle SX race would put on hold RV’s attempt to mimic his perfect 2011 season (SX & MX titles, Moto Des Nations crown, Monster Energy SX Cup victory) as Villopoto had to sit out the MX Nationals season. But he’d soon rebound with Moto 1 win as defending champ of the 2012 Monster Energy Cup event in Vegas, certainly showing signs of what’s in store for 2013.
