Nico Rosberg

Growing up among the legendary streets of Monaco, and at the knee of former F1 World Champ, Keke Rosberg, it was hard to imagine any other destiny than the cockpit of a racing car for Nico Rosberg.

However that’s almost exactly what happened. Turning his back on motorsport completely, it was the pro tennis court, and a place at University that held Nico’s early focus. It didn’t last long though. Unable to shake the racing bug, and the pull of the blacktop, Nico swapped his tennis shoes for a race suit and crash helmet.

After a successful stint in Karting, where he raced alongside Lewis Hamilton in the European and World championships, Nico stepped up to cars in 2002. In his rookie year, the young German locked down the national Formula BMW title. Graduating to a full Formula 3 campaign the following season, Nico got his first taste of top drawer competition. By 2004, aged 19, Nico had canned the university offer for good, and signed a contract with the ART GP2 Team.

His commitment was fully rewarded. Nico took the first ever GP2 title in 2005, dominating the season with 12 podiums and five wins. The performance was also enough to promote him to the full-time race seat in the Williams F1 Team. Four frustrating seasons followed, where despite showing huge pace over a single lap in qualifying, Nico was only able to pull together 75 points, two podiums and two fastest laps.

In 2010 it all changed however. Mercedes came knocking with an offer the young German couldn’t refuse. Joining seven time world champion Michael Schumacher and Monster Energy, Nico had the chance to establish himself in a manufacturer backed team. In his first season with the Silver Arrows alone, Nico’s results eclipsed those of his last four with Williams; three podiums and 142 points.

The results continued to roll in throughout the next three seasons. Nico never once took his foot off the gas; consistently finishing inside the top ten in the world championship standings, with three wins, six podiums and a massive haul of 353 points.

2014 is set to be Nico’s breakout championship year. Continuing in the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Team, and sharing a garage with Lewis Hamilton again, Nico has his eyes on World Championship glory. Watch this space.
