Lance McDermott’s a bike rider, albeit a broken one for 2009. It’ll be best to go take a look for yourself. Prior to that he had built a solid athletic foundation playing ice hockey in the UK’s premier national league. Visiting a local UK skatepark on in-line skates just messing around with a buddy, McDermott watched in awe as a kid on a BMX bike threw down some tricks. That was it – the epiphany. And with the backing of his folks, who’d invested a god-awful amount of time, travel and money into Lance’s hockey career, McDermott switched from ice hockey to BMX. At 19 an ad for a freestyle MTB contest caught his eye, bought a mountain bike the day before the contest, tried a flip and busted his leg. Once he was healed, and based largely on his BMX merits up to that point, McDermott got invited to a MTB slopestyle contest and, of course, had to lie about his time in the saddle on a slopestyle course. The lie paid off and McDermott placed 4th. Dialed, McDermott continued to excel on his mountain bike, hooked up with Monster in 2008 and proceeded to win the overall Nissan Qashqai Challenge MTB Tour championship. Not bad for a hockey player, eh?
