Emirates Drift Championship - Round 1

After quite the hiatus, drifting returned to the Middle East on December 30th as the all-new Monster Energy Emirates Drift Championship (EDC) kicked off in the amazing setting of Abu Dhabi’s empty region desert as part of the epic 2018 Liwa Sports Festival.

With months of planning behind the launch of this brand new series, 30 of the Middle East’s best drift drivers turned up to the event to face off against one another and to see who would be crowned the first ever EDC event winner. 

For anyone unfamiliar with the format of competitive drifting, drivers would practice on the custom course layout first – a track specifically designed to benefit the more aggressive drivers and lower powered cars, in order to ensure high powered cars would not have a large advantage – before attempting single car qualifying runs in the first portion of the competition. 

Once the qualifying was over and decided, drivers qualifying from positions 9-24 would be paired up against each other in our Top 24 sudden death stage, whilst qualifiers 1-8 would gain an automatic pass into the Top 16 stage. These battle stages would see drivers battle head-to-head, with both drivers getting a “lead" and a “chase” run, before judges decided who had done enough to take it on to the next stage of competition.

Monster Energy athletes and Lunatics by Nature (LBN) teammates Khalifa Al Nahyan, Dany Neville and Sultan Al Qassimi were all on hand to compete at the event and qualifying saw Khalifa put down a score of 78.33 to earn himself a 6th place finish and a spot in the Top 16 stage. Sultan would also go straight to the Top 16 with an 8th place score of 77.67, whilst Dany narrowly missed out on the Top 8 places, scoring 76.33 to finish qualifying in 9th position. 

It wouldn’t be long before Dany had the chance to avenge that result though, as Dany and Sultan would meet in battle at the Top 16 stage of the competition. That battle though would see Sultan go 2-for-2, as he defeated Dany to go to the Top 8. 

Not only would Sultan go on to the Top 8 though, he would go all the way to an exciting finale against Ahmed Alameri, where the Lunatics by Nature and Monster Energy athlete would eventually take the win of the first ever Monster Energy EDC event. 

Khalifa Al Nahyan would also go on to take 4th place after narrowly losing out to a very on-form Nicholas Solomon in 3rd and Dany Neville would end the event in 11th position, meaning all 3 LBN drivers sit in a great position heading into the next Monster Energy EDC event in the RAK Track in Ras Al-Khaimah in the UAE on Friday, January 19th.
