Filipe Toledo Destroys J-Bay

Jul 052018

For the second year in a row, Monster Energy’s Filipe Toledo steamrolled the field to win the Corona Open J-Bay. In doing so, he snatches the ratings lead and the coveted yellow jersey. The event took just four days to complete.

The surf was pumping. The sharks were swimming. And while the WSL season is a marathon, Filipe was in an all-out sprint, the fastest cheetah in the land of cheetahs. Posting heat totals north of 16 points from round 3 till the final, Filipe sped, carved and twirled past opponents in a league of his own. And when the last buzzer sounded in the final against Wade Carmichael, the young Brazilian sat alone in the lineup, with his head in his hands, absorbing his new reality as the world No. 1. It’s where he belongs and, likely, where he’s going to stay. “I’m ready to fight,” he told the WSL. “Let’s do this.”

On to Teahupo’o.
