Belgium’s Phil Zwijsen developed a reputation early in his career for a certain style of counterintuitive skateboarding (e.g., in the rain). For several years, he became an avid stormchaser, actively searching out wet spots while most skateboarders would run for cover. Zwijsen’s clips from this period share more in common with ice skating—except the ice is melted: Graceful and serene, Zwijsen understands that to make a splash you sometimes have to get those wheels wet. Zwijsen turned pro in 2009, consistently cranking out footage for some outstanding videos, but in 2015 he suffered an injury which kept him off his board for nearly a year. Zwijsen being Zwijsen, he managed to parlay this recovery period into something productive: the “Jacky” video series was thus born, with a laid-up Zwijsen attacking the editing duties and creating something unique. Zwijsen makes things happen, in any weather.
