Darcy Ward was a ‘you have to see it to believe it’ sort of talent. He was as natural a motorcycle racer as you will ever see, and rarely has one man been so at one with a speedway bike. The Queenslander left his native Australia when he was just 15 to forge a racing career in Europe and he exploded on to the scene like nobody else before or after him. He was a phenomena and took the speedway world by storm, winning consecutive World Under-21 titles and then winning the Danish Grand Prix as a full-time Speedway Grand Prix rider at the age of just 21. His career was tragically cut short after an accident left him paralysed in 2015, and there’s no doubt he would’ve gone on to win multiple world titles. Now a speedway promoter back home in Australia, he still plays a part in bringing through the next generation of Aussie racers.
