Monster Energy’s Speedway GP racers back in action this weekend for the FIM SGP of Great Britain - Cardiff

Published On:: 14/08/2024

Ripping back from their mid-summer break the Monster Energy-back FIM Speedway Grand Prix crew arrives, sideways we figure, at Cardiff’s (UK) Principality Stadium this week for the Saturday, Aug. 17th running of the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff.

Dubbed as “Britain’s biggest indoor motorsports event” by race officials, Monster Energy will be well represented with racers familiar to the British speedway fans, including recent FIM Speedway of Nations winning British team member Dan Bewley, along with British League racing stars running the M-claw logo in Freddie Lindgren and Jack Holder.

In addition, hometown hero Bewley will look to add another Cardiff SGP title to the one he so famously captured in his rookie pro year at Principality Stadium.

“Cardiff GP this weekend and I feel like everyone’s excited for Cardiff… fans, riders – everybody,” said Bewley. “Such a cool stadium to go to. We have some big crowds throughout the year, but nothing compares to Cardiff. The atmosphere there is somethings special. Principality Stadium is right in the middle of the city. Awesome history for me, getting my first win there, but even apart from that it’s just a cool place to race. We’ve got the Sprint race on Friday, so hopefully an opportunity to get a few more points.”

...

As Bewley noted, Friday’s Sprint race (3 p.m. UK time), which is new to FIM SGP, will be run for the first time ever at Cardiff. In the special event-within-an-event the fastest racers from each of the four qualifying groups will face off for four additional Speedway GP World Championship points. Then from there, the winner of the Sprint race gets first dibs on starting gate selection for Saturday’s Speedway GP race.

Added Bewley, who won the inaugural Sprint race earlier this season at the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland in Warsaw: “After winning the first Sprint race it’d be pretty cool to win the second one. There’s only two in the year, and it’s the first year we’ve had them, so to be able to sweep the two would be great. And nice to get a couple extra points, plus it’s cool for the fans. A little bit of extra excitement in qualifying.”

The last time the FIM Speedway GP racers got together was the mid-July Speedway of Nations at National Speedway Stadium in Manchester, England. The trio of Bewley (Great Britain), Holder (Australia) and Lindgren (Sweden) all helped their respective countries to the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, respectively.

For Bewley, who currently sits in 9th place in the FIM Speedway GP points, the night was especially thrilling as not only did he help Great Britain to its second SON championship in two years, but he was also able to do it in front of his hometown fans.
