The King of Cardiff! Dan Bewley sweeps FIM SGP Great Britain Sprint & Main Event

Published On:: 18/08/2024

Dan Bewley is never going to have to pay for dinner or drinks in Cardiff again...

With his second career FIM World Speedway GP Main Event victory in three years coming on Saturday at his hometown Principality Stadium, the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff, and on the heels of his first-ever SGP Sprint race victory in Cardiff on Friday, it was an absolute banner weekend for Bewley – the King of Cardiff!

“Think we had the fastest time in practice (he did), got into the Sprint race and won that one. Pretty good mood after that. Went to bed, came back to a new day, new meet and the same result. So it was pretty awesome. What a crowd it was tonight. Won the semi. Won the final. And what a night, really.”

The Cardiff win for Bewley is his second in three years. And combined with the Sprint win, which gave Bewley a sweep of the inaugural FIM Speedway GP Friday qualifying bonus races (he also won the inaugural Sprint race at the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland in Warsaw, Poland), Bewley was definitely pumped.

“Two in three years,” he said of his second Cardiff SGP win at Principality Stadium. “First ever GP I came to was here. People said you could dream of it. So winning here is just awesome. There’s no other stadium like it, right in the middle of town. And now we’ve got three in the books. Maybe hit the Monster after-party with Woffy (Monster Energy teammate Tai Woffinden).”

With the four points from Friday’s Sprint win added to Saturday’s Main Event victory, Bewley upped his season total to 73 points, which moved him from 9th to 7th in the overall standings and well within striking distance of an SGP medal.

Understandably overshadowed in the hometown Bewley frenzy celebration at Cardiff was a solid 3rd place podium effort put up by Monster Energy’s Freddie Lindgren on Saturday.

“It was a really good night. I always enjoy racing Cardiff’s indoor stadium,” said Lindgren, who sits in 3rd place overall in the standings, just a couple points back of 2nd place Robert Lambert. “Racing was really intense, but we’re back on the box. Great battles. Great atmosphere. And overall a great night for speedway.”

Rounding out the top ten in scoring for Monster Energy at Cardiff was Jack Holder in 7th place. Holder is currently in 4th place overall in the standings with 87 points, one point back of Lindgren.
