Day 4 @ Loretta’s highlighted by six overall titles, including Drew Adams’ 250 Pro Sport title

Published On: 8/2/2024

Monster Energy’s Dudney (250 B), Townsend (250 B Limited), Thomas (450 B), Covell (125 Jr.) & Pappas (Mini Sr. 2) also win Loretta’s National Championships

Rallying to back-to-back 1-1 moto finishes in the premier 250 Pro Sport class at the 43rd running of the Monster Energy AMA Amateur Motocross Championship, presented by AMSOIL, Monster Energy’s Drew Adams (Team Green/Kawasaki) nabbed the class’ overall title on Friday.

As impressive at the 1-1 finishes were, it was Adams’ effort following a turn 1/lap 1 crash on Tuesday’s opening 250 Pro Sport moto, one which saw him battle back from dead last to snag a highly important 4th place, that would earn him the overall class Loretta’s championship.

“Yeah, me and my teammate and couple other guys got together on the first start – definitely didn’t start the week off right,” said Adams. “But we turned that around real fast and I’ve been on a good pace ever since.”

In Friday’s third and decisive 250 Pro Sport moto race officials, according to Adams, “dropped the gate real fast,” and Adams (nor the other racers he’d admit) were ready for it. As a result, Adams would have to battle through the pack a bit before he took over the lead.

“Had to pass a few guys and I ended up getting up front about halfway or so,” explained Adams. “Then, yep – got this 250 Pro Sport victory.”

Completing the Monster Energy sweep of the 250 Pro Sport class were Loretta’s first timer, New Zealander Cole Davies (Star Racing/Yamaha) in 2nd place, and Parker Ross (Honda) in 3rd.

In 250 B racing, the guys on ‘double deck’ in terms of Who’s Next?, the Monster Energy/Team Green Kawasaki tandem of Caden Dudney and Landen Gordon came in, via Mad Max Thunderdome terms – (Two men enter, one man leaves) - as in “leaves” with the class title. And in the decisive third moto that’d be Dudney with the title, winning the final moto and going 3-1-1 to Gordon’s 1-2-2.

“We got a descent start, think I got the holeshot, then heard Landen (Gordon) behind me so I just tried to keep it smooth and not fall. We got it done and had fun,” said Dudney.

Added Gordon: “Yeah, I put in a good push. Had nothing left in it. Gave it my all. Yeah, we’ll be better next time,” said Gordon the 250 B runner-up.

With competition wrapping up tomorrow, Monster Energy has racers in title contention in a slew of classes, including: Open Pro Sport, Schoolboy 1 and Schoolboy 2, Supermini 1 and Supermini 2, Junior 25+, 450 B Limited, Collegeboy, Girls and WMX.

Notes & Quotes

  • “I’ll be racing the Ironman Pro National for the Pro Circuit team.” – Monster Energy/Team Green/Kawasaki’s newly minted 250 Pro Sport champ, Drew Adams, when asked by MX Sport Loretta’s Live reporter Jason Weigandt on what his plans are now.
  • “I didn’t have great starts for the week. Even that one was terrible (Moto 1). It was a brutal race that one. But rode better than all the other ones. First time at the Ranch, so that was cool.” – Monster Energy’s Cole Davies (Star/Yamaha) 250 Pro Sport runner-up to Adams.
  • “Man, yeah, in the trenches that moto. Didn’t feel great to be honest, but put my head down. Wanted that 3rd bad.” – Monster Energy’s Parker Ross (Honda), completing the Monster Energy sweep of the 250 Pro Sport podium.
  • “It could not feel any better (regarding his first Loretta’s title). As most of you know I broke both my femurs two years ago, and that hurt really back. But I put in the work the Sandbox crew and it paid off.” – Monster Energy’s 450 B champion Diesel Thomas.
  • “I knew I had a four point gap to begin with, then after I fell I just wanted to finish the best I could – and I ended up on top.” – Monster Energy’s Mini Sr. 2 Loretta’s champion, Dane Pappas (Gas Gas).
  • “I got a good start, put some good laps in. Saw Seth (Dennis/Monster Energy) make a mistake and go down. Then I just rode some solid laps.” – Monster Energy/Team Green/Kawasaki’s 250 B Limited Loretta’s champion Grayson Townsend.
  • “Yeah, it’s definitely a bummer. Slid out a little bit. But we’ll look forward to the next one.” – Monster Energy’s Seth Dennis (KTM) on his runner-up finish to Townsend.
  • “I just decided to breath all the way through it, reminded myself and got it through.” – Mini Sr. 1 Moto 3 winner, Monster Energy’s Kevyn Depinho (KTM).
  • In Friday’s opening Schoolboy 2 Moto 2, Monster Energy’s Caden Dudney (Team Green/Kawasaki) put up the fastest lap of the week – all classes included – when he clocked a blistering 1:48.464.
  • “It went really good. Got a really good jump. Got the holeshot. Lost the lead early, but got back around him.” – Monster Energy/Team Green/Kawasaki’s Carson Wood, the winner of Friday’s Supermini 2 Moto 2.
  • “It was a lot more tacky than moto 1. Track was good, ruts were setting up good. Perfect conditions right now and I had a lot of fun.” – WMX Moto 2 winner (along with Moto 1 win) Kyleigh Stallings (Monster Energy/Team Green/Kawasaki).
  • “I wasn’t riding like myself at all. Never been up here before, so it feels good. Got another one tomorrow. Gonna come out swinging.” Monster Energy’s 125 Jr. B/C racer National Champion Owen Covell.
