Monster Energy Supersport TT: Dunlop On The Cusp Of All Time Record

Published On:: 2023/06/06

Race day number four at the 2023 Isle of Man TT saw Michael Dunlop do the near unimaginable, by smashing the 130mph record barrier aboard a 600cc machine, as well as romping to a record breaking 25th TT career victory.

The 34 year old Northern Irishman’s 11th Supersport class win was the perfect follow up to his Supertwin victory on race day. Scorching  by beating rival Peter Hickman to the chequered flag by an impressive 9.6 second margain, with lap record speed of 130.403. This now also means Dunlop continues his utter domination of the Supersport class.

Having led race one from start to finish on Saturday, he repeated the feat in race two, ending with an advantage of 9.6 seconds over runner-up Hickman, with Dean Harrison a further 24.8 seconds adrift in third. The leading three riders all broke Dunlop's one-year-old lap record on the final lap; Dunlop was fastest with 130.403mph, Hickman registered 130.219 and Harrison lapped at 129.697.

After the race, Michael told us: “I enjoyed that one - I controlled the race from the front. When I saw that I had a wee gap, I tried to calm down a little bit. Towards the end of the race I got a bit of a push on - I just wanted to keep things rolling along slowly but surely. I was able to cruise over the mountain; I got a board that said I had about an eight second lead. The little bike has been running mint - it’s a homebrew machine, and I think the boys have managed to put out a real good bike out of the workshop and to beat the factory boys is even better. The 600 class has been good to me over the years, so to do the double again, as well as put in a 130 lap is fantastic. I always knew I could do a 130; so I thought I’d push on the last lap and do it for the craic.”

The result puts Dunlop on the very cusp of breaking the all time victory record of 26 wins at the Isle of Man TT - currently held by his late uncle -  the legendary Joey Dunlop; a record that has stood since Joey Dunlop won the Ultra Lightweight 125 TT in 2000.

The action continues on Friday 9th June with the second RL360 Superstock race, and the second Carole Nash Supertwin TT. Watch it all live with all live via; https://ttplus.iomttraces.com/.
