Day Three | X Games Aspen 2024

X Games Aspen 2024 is officially in the books! On the third and final day of X Games Aspen 2024, 19-year-old Kokomo Murase from Gifu, Japan soared to a dominant victory in Women’s Snowboard Big Air final as her third medal of the weekend. A historic feat!  

The team’s overall medal haul also raised the bar: During three days of competitions, Monster Energy riders claimed a total of 19 X Games Medals (9 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze) in the 23rd edition of Winter X Games in Aspen. For perspective, the team earned 18 medals at X Games Aspen 2023, including seven gold, so this year’s medal count is on a new level!

Speaking of new level, here’s how it all went down for the team at X Games Aspen 2024 on Sunday:

PACIFICO WOMEN’S SNOWBOARD BIG AIR: KOKOMO MURASE DROPS NBD & MAKES HISTORY

A PERFECT TEN: This year at X Games Aspen, all Big Air competitions scored Run 1 as a ‘Style Trick’ with a maximum of 10 points factoring into riders’ total scores. All weekend, no rider had scored a Perfect Ten – until Kokomo Murase dropped into the Women’s Snowboard Big Air final. The 19-year-old earned the top score by sending a frontside 360 stalefish pullback – rotating 540 degrees but pulling back in the opposite direction before landing – and the Aspen crowd went wild!

Strategically building her score, Murase sent backside triple cork 1440 mute over the jump for 43 points, rising all the way to the top spot. As the rest of the field attempted to catch up, Murase dropped a trick never landed by a woman at X Games: a frontside 1440 aerial for 43 points and a total score of 94 points. 

GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE: A whopping 19 points ahead of the closest competitor, Murase could have taken Run 5 as a victory lap. Instead, she attempted another potentially history-making trick: a backside triple cork 1620. Although she could not ride away clean from the game-changing trick, Murase provided the crowd at X Games 2024 a glimpse of the future in women’s snowboarding, and it looks bright!

“I still remember my first X Games six years ago and now I got here. I’m so happy!” said Murase upon winning Women’s Snowboard Big Air gold at X Games Aspen 2024.

HISTORIC THREEPEAT: After already clinching Knuckle Huck gold and Slopestyle silver at X Games Aspen 2024, Murase’s Big Air gold made her the third snowboarder in history to claim three medals at a single X Games. She joins the ranks of Jennie Waara (1997) and Marcus Kleveland (2022, 2023). Murase also received the $10,000 St Hubert the Stag ‘Best in Snow’ Award for best performance at X Games Aspen 2024.

Murase now owns nine X Games medals (3 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze) and earned her first gold at X Games Oslo 2018.

SAMSUNG GALAXY WOMEN’S SKI SLOPESTYLE: GIULIA TANNO RETURNS TO COMPETITION TO CLAIM BRONZE MEDAL

BACK TO CLAIMING PODIUMS: Returning to competition after a series of injuries is one thing. Doing it in the biggest showcase for action sports, X Games, is an entirely different beast. But that’s exactly what 25-year-old Giulia Tanno from Lenzerheide, Switzerland achieved on Sunday when she clinched the bronze medal in Samsung Galaxy Women's Ski Slopestyle.

THE ONLY DOUBLE CORK: In a field of Olympic champions and X Games gold medalists, Tanno held her own by throwing technical rail tricks and a rare aerial move seldomly seen in women’s competition. Her technical double cork 1080 over the final jump, preceded by fast-footed rail tricks such as 270 continuing to and switch front swap the rainbow rail earned the Swiss team rider a spot on the podium with bronze.

Tanno owns five X Games medals (2 silver, 3 bronze).

This concludes a boundary-pushing edition of Winter X Games in Aspen! It’s been an unforgettable Winter X Games that showcased young upstarts and icons of the sport expanding the limits of what’s possible in winter sports. 

X Games Aspen 2024 also saw women athletes shine like never before across a wide range of events, including the new women’s Knuckle Hucks. Historic!
