Cianciarulo pulled the holeshot and led the main event before getting passed by Webb on Lap 4. Sexton, who got out in 5th place off the start, was battling for a podium spot when he collided with Justin Barcia (on Lap 2) and went down, rejoining the race near 10th place. Tomac, who’d gone from just inside 10th place to 3rd on the opening lap, put the hammer down with a clean pass on Webb on Lap 4 – and opened up a 3.5 to 4-second lead. With Tomac comfortably up front, Anderson, after a strong 4th place start, moved into 3rd place and was poised for a podium finish, when a minor crash took him out of contention on Lap 15. Sexton continued to race back through the pack, moving from 8th to 5th by the end of the contest. Anderson remounted and was able to move up to 6th, salvaging some valuable points. Tomac easily handled a late-race charge from Webb to win his second consecutive race of the season, leading the overall 450 class point chase with a perfect 1st/1st effort in two races.

250 WSX

 

For the second week in a row a Monster Energy 250 WSX racer was involved in a massive crash at the start, with Levi Kitchen (Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha) being the victim at San Diego when he got caught up with several other racers at the end of the start straight and went down – and was unable to continue. McAdoo would survive the carnage, coming out of the first lap in 4th place and moving up to podium position (3rd) by Lap 4. McAdoo moved into 2nd place on Lap 7 with a strong pass on Enzo Lopes (Yamaha) and was catching race leader Jett Lawrence (Honda) as he held 2nd position through Lap 18. McAdoo would (admittedly) suffer a bit of arm pump in the race and that cost him a spot, for the second week in a row, when he was passed by RJ Hampshire (Husqvarna) on Lap 18 (of 19). McAdoo tripped the timing in 3rd place, while Robertson raced to a respectable 6th place finish.

First time ever for Monster Energy AMA Supercross at Snapdragon Stadium, home of San Diego State University football. 40th year of SX in SD, with the previous events being held at Petco Park (MLB’s Padres), Qualcomm Stadium (NFL’s Chargers).

 

Sexton came into the San Diego SX as the defending race champ – his first-ever SX win.

The Oakland round, scheduled for last week (Jan. 14) at RingCentral Coliseum, has been rescheduled for Feb. 18th.

Crashing out in his heat race (Heat 1) and having his bike run over by two riders (Aaron Plessinger and Fredrik Noren) and gas tank crushed, Sexton had to make the main via the LCQ – which he won.

 

On Hampshire catching him for 2nd late in the race… “Obviously I got into some lappers and I didn’t navigate them very well, and he closed quite a bit on me there. Then I made a couple big mistakes in the rhythm (sections) that allowed him to get onto my back wheel.” — McAdoo

 

With the injury to Austin Forkner at Anaheim 1, top flight amateur racer Carson Mumford was recently elevated to the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team for the WSX 250 series. Mumford will make his 250 class pro debut at the Oakland round (Feb. 18).
