The penultimate stop of the 2019 WSL Championship Tour hits Portuguese waters this week and we are so excited! Not just because we get to use the word “penultimate,” but because this is where world titles are won and lost. Where dreams are made and hopes are crushed. Where the smell of sardines is carried in offshore winds over the town of Peniche, across the crowd of screaming fans and holds open Supertubos’ super tubes so its occupants can either emerge heroes or be swallowed whole. The excitement, well, it’s just too much to ignore. So, we’re paying attention.
The 2019 MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal runs from October 16 - 28. Tune in to worldsurfleague.com to cheer on the Monster team!
Filipe Toledo: Filipe is not just fighting for a world title, but against an injury. Beware the wounded animal.
Conner Coffin: He’s reached the finals here in the past, and history repeats...and history repeats. (Get it?)
Owen Wright: Owen has shined this year. Anything above 9th and he’s laughing.
Griffin Colapinto: Griff is getting a little too close to that end of year cut-off point. Back up, Griff. Baaaack up.
Seth Moniz: Seth is so close to the top-10 he can smell it — and it kinda smells like Portuguese sardines.
Yago Dora: This is the type of place where Yago can get 10s. Barrels and airs, barrels and airs.
Frederico Morais: Local boy, local knowledge. The Portuguese Prince is gunning for the throne.
How’s the forecast? Plenty of swell in the water! They will likely get started on Friday when the winds clean up.
Is Filipe going to win the world title? Maybe. But he’s nursing a very tough back injury, so first and foremost we’re wishing him a quick recovery.
What will the surfers be doing on down days? A little golf, a little wine, a lotta seafood. Enjoying Europe while it lasts!
