The 5 time downhill World Champion was less than 3 seconds off of the win, after 25 minutes of total race time, and hours of transfer pedalling. The Australian did it on his usual flat pedals on one of the more pedal EWS race courses of the year. The Wicklow stop takes place in one day, with 7 stages stretched out over about 45 kilometres of rocky mountain side, and metering wooded single track. One of the flatter events on the schedule, Hill surprised everyone by taking on some of the world’s best trail riders and showing them how it’s done.

Only his second professional Enduro race ever, Hill was happy with the result and is looking forward to racing more of this style of event in the future. “The day went pretty good! I had clean stages with nothing exceptional going on. Nothing too Crazy.  2 of the tracks here were really fun and 2 others were just really flat.” When asked about his career commitment to riding flat pedals and whether he thought they may have helped on some of the rockier stages Hill laughed. “Flat pedals always help a man when he’s riding a bicycle!”

One thing that certainly did help him make his move to the top of the overall classification was the  lack of mechanicals. Many riders were taken out early with punctures and mechanicals this week while Hill managed to keep his wheels filled with air.

Fellow Australian and Monster Energy teammate Jared Graves, a former EWS World Champion,  was taken out of contention by a flat midway through stage 6, ending his week.

You can see Sam Hill and Jared Graves at the next EWS stop in La Thuile, Italy on ‪July 16-17. Hill will also be competing at the World Cup DH event in Fort William, Scotland in 2 weeks time.
