Chippa Wilson doesn’t have the looks of the prototypical surfer. His tattoos, straight-brimmed hats and overall subtle style don’t scream “surfer” as much as they do “skater.” But this is for good reason, as the Cabarita native’s surfing style is one that’s highly inspired by skating.
Widely regarded as one of the most technically advanced surfers in the world, spins, backside 540s and his signature move - the big spin - are all in a day’s work for Wilson. In fact, when Wilson burst onto the surfing scene, the media that covered him actually had to refer to the skating community to learn exactly what all of his moves were called.
One of the other beloved attributes about Chippa Wilson is the fact that he’s a self-made man. Yes, he’s made a name for himself on the water, but before he found success surfing he made ends meet as a carpenter. When he’s not on the water, he can still be found inside his Cabarita home garage working on his truck and his motorcycle.
Wilson’s surfing reputation has already scored him some notable accolades. His debut feature film, NOW, earned him a “Breakthrough Performer of the Year” nomination at the 2010 Surfer Poll Awards. He was also recently invited to the World Tour’s Fiji stop, where he competed with the No. 1 and No. 2 surfers in the sport, holding his own thanks to his diverse and unique moves.
Chippa Wilson is subtle, stoic and mild mannered. That is, until you get him out on the water. Monster Energy is proud to partner with Chippa Wilson and his unique surf-skate style.
