DARKFEST RETURNS | BREAKING GROUND WITH SAM REYNOLDS IN BUILD VIDEO #1

Jan 152018

The boys have started 2018 off with a bang! Breaking ground at a new location for DarkFEST in South Africa and in true Fest style, going bigger than ever before!

The new location, situated in Stellenbosch, just a 45 minute drive outside of Cape Town - Boasts huge elevation and scenic views perfect for the Fest style courses we have come to know and love. This is where Sam Reynolds and his "Dream Team" consisting of Nico Vink and Clemens Kaudela will be based for the next 3 weeks while constructing this beast of a course before the worlds best free riders descend upon the wild African plains for the biggest and baddest DarkFEST yet!

Armed to the teeth with their Lovol diggers. The team broke ground in the beautiful mountains of Stellenbosch last Monday morning, since then if you blinked you'd miss a feature being created. That's how efficient these guys are. Clemens the digger operator, is chief of piling the massive landings. Nico is the shaping perfectionist in the 5 ton digger and Sam the site foreman, making sure everything is running smoothly. Together these guys are going to create the most badass MTB course you've ever seen!

Sam Reynolds - "The course is going to look like a combination of some of my favourite jumps I've ever ridden! First of all, paying tribute to Nico Vinks Loosefest - Those are some of my favourite jumps ever so we're planning on building a huge 70-80ft hit like the first, secondly a few years back at 9 Knights in Livigno. We built a massive 90 degree hip which you could just blast! This time we're going to recreate something like that but with no limits to how big you can go. I think the only limit will be how scared you'll be, which is pretty scared because it's already looking massive. Last but not least, my personal favourite jump of all time - The DarkFEST step up from last year, we're going to build another like that to finish off the course with a bang! So expect some big tricks and hopefully some huge air..."

Being mid summer in South Africa, the temperatures have been in the mid to high 30's, which makes the mid day shift a sweltering one, so a lot of trips to the surrounding dams and pools has been going down during lunch to cool off and recharge for the afternoon shift. To add to that, the dirt becomes like powder in the heat, so it's a bit tricky to shape things up on the hill, with the drought in Cape Town at the moment the water usage has to be kept at a minimum, so they're hoping for mother nature to show up and sprinkle a bit of rain over the course to help things out.
