F1: Showdown in Barcelona

May 162016

Flash back to 1989, Ayrton Senna Vs. Alain Prost; one of the most intense Formula One seasons on record; two team-mates locked in a white-hot battle for the drivers’ championship. The chase driver dives down the inside, the lead driver shuts the door. The result? Tyre smoke, and both cars stationary in the run-off area at the Japanese Grand Prix. The incident defined the season, and ensured that the legendary rivalry was forever etched in motorsport history. Sound familiar? This weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix had more than just a few similarities. Two team-mates bossing the competition, and locked in a season long battle for the drivers’ championship. Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team’s Lewis Hamilton claims his first pole position since the Bahrain Grand Prix, staging what could have been the start of a fight-back against team mate Nico Rosberg’s four consecutive wins of the year. Come race day, the lights go out, and Nico noses into the lead off the start. Lewis slipstreams his Silver Arrow team-mate into the first four corners of the 4.6km (2.8 mile) Circuit de Barcelona Cataluña. On the exit of the legendary full-throttle Repsol curve, Lewis goes for a gap, Nico defends, and the result? Both Silver Arrows skid into the gravel trap.
