Frederico Morais | Quick Five

Jun 292018

Five minutes with Frederico Morais ahead of the world surf league tour stop at the J-Bay Open

It’s really good to be back. J-Bay is such an amazing wave.

It’s your second year on tour. Last year you did very well in J-Bay, finishing second in your very first event here, what is it like coming here after last years result and being on tour for a second year?

It’s really good to be back. J-Bay is such an amazing wave. Last year was a very good event for me and I had heaps of fun with a very good result. Hopefully this year I can match up to the expectations, but mostly I just want to enjoy myself out there and it’s such a good opportunity to surf one of the world best waves with just two or one other surfer out. That’s an incredible thing just in itself. I’m going to keep things simple, and just surf well and make one heat at a time.

What was the most difficult thing about your first year on tour?

Just the new locations I would say. There were a few I already knew, but most of them were new and just adapting to them and my boards and everything else that comes with traveling - like places to stay and all the traveling. It can be difficult at times. Fortunately I have a really good travel partner in my coach - Richard ‘Dog’ Marsh who made it a lot easier, and really fun.

I would love to make the top ten. Definitely that’s a goal. But for now I’m just looking at this event.

What are you looking forward to most at next weeks J-Bay event?

The swell - haha! The swell and waves look like it’s going to be firing, so hopefully we can get something similar to last year because we had a full week of amazing waves and it looks like it could be the same. 100% there is going to be some amazing surfing happened. I’m excited.

Do you have surfboards specifically made for J-Bay?

My boards are the same as last year. I'm actually going to get six brand new boards tomorrow shaped by my shaper JS (Jason Stevenson). All are copies from the board I did so well on last year. So hopefully they will go just as good.

What is different of about J-Bay compared to any other event on tour?

J-Bay is a very special wave because you can go so fast and you can put so much power into each turn and just the whole vibe of the village and the whole event is so so special. It has the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen and it’s just my favourite wave on tour.

What are your hopes and dreams for the coming year?

I would love to make the top ten. Definitely that’s a goal. But for now I’m just looking at this event. To surf my first heat and then from there I’ll create my own expectations.
