Get him to the GRiD – Petter Solberg

Oct 242016

The Norwegian shredder Petter Solberg is ready for his big comeback to Greece. This time around, he’ll not be spitting rallycross dirt but instead shredding tyres on the asphalt for the Gymkhana GRiD Final. We caught up with him few days before the big final and we talk all things Gymkhana GRiD!

"I’m really looking forward to meeting all the other drivers that will be competing, and driving in a new discipline"

What car are you bringing to Gymkhana GRiD?

We are bringing my Citroen Xsara WRC car to Gymkhana GRiD Finals this year.

What modifications have you done to the car?

It’s got 450bhp, electronic differentials and gearbox. It’s actually the car that [Sébastien] Loeb was world champion with many times. I used it on rallies in 2009. Carlos Sainz has used it, Colin McRae has used it – it’s a pretty special car!

What’s your favorite feature on the car?

Honestly it’s just a really easy, good fun, car to play with and drive. It’s set up so well and handles very very well. I think it’s still a very cool car. It works well for demonstrations. I’ve used it at shows all over the world, so I am very comfortable in it. Perhaps it’s not the fastest, but it’s always very well received, and you can always give a lot of action with it.

What have you been doing to prepare for Gymkhana GRiD?

We have been so busy with the World Rallycross programme, that we haven’t had a huge amount of time to prepare. For sure the car is ready though, my team have prepared it at the headquarters in Torsby. So I’m looking forward to having a play in Greece, and putting on a good show for all the fans. The car is on the trailer now with fresh tyres – so that’s all I need!

Is there anyone you are most looking forward to competing against?

It doesn’t matter who it is – we will be flat out. I’ve wanted to do Gymkhana GRiD for the past couple of years, but because of dates with my World Rallycross programme it just hasn’t worked out. I’m really looking forward to meeting all the other drivers that will be competing, and driving in a new discipline. I’m really looking forward to heading back to Greece again too – I’ve had a long history there from the rally part of my career, so I’m sure I will meet up with a lot of people I know from those days too. It will be a great weekend for sure!
