In this edition of Monster Energy HEAT CHECK, we sit down with breakdance guru Moy Rivas, a.k.a. Bboy Moy. An avid collector, he takes a dive into sneaker culture, discussing what he looks for in footwear, and admires about his favorite sneaker designers.
In his visit with HEAT CHECK, Moy reminisces about his early days as a breakdancer by showing off his Animal Instinct Jordan 3’s — sneakers that symbolize his “wild life.” He also gives a rundown of his favorite features and details of his AirMax 97’s, his Yeezy 350’s, and more.
Moy also explains how constant reinvention and innovation are what aligns sneaker culture with breaking. With over two decades of experience as a professional dancer, he’s certainly an expert on the topic. Over the years, he has become a leader in both the educational and competitive aspects of dance — someone who is focused on giving back to his community.
In 2011, Moy founded the Break Free Community Center with the mission of creating a structured and inspiring program for youth and young adults with a passion for hip-hop culture. Three years later, the community center transitioned into Break Free Hip Hop School, a program that offers classes focused on authentic hip hop culture programming (including break dancing, DJing, and street art).
In the fall of 2021, Break Free opened CYE LIFESTYLE Boutique and Art Gallery next door to their HQ in hopes to expand their brand, Create Your Escape. CYE LIFESTYLE is a culmination of fashion, art, and cultural experience that amplifies local brands and street artists under one roof, in an environment that bridges the gap between old and new.
From educating and empowering youth and fighting to bring breakdancing to the Olympics and showcasing killer style, Moy is certainly showing the next generation that b-boys and b-girls do much more than just dance.
