This X Games we sat down with the man, the myth, the legend behind the B&E Invitational; Henrik Harlaut to get his inside scoop on the upcoming event and what we can look forward to this week!
How did you come up with the idea for B&E? It all came from a group of people sitting down and talking. With Eric Iberg as leader of brainstorms, myself & Phil Casabon as the hosts and the concept and Raf as Event manager, it was about time to create something new; a new concept and shape never seen before on snow, with no federation, no governing body, just the riders and the public choice involved. Each year the event seems to get bigger and better - how do you come up with the ideas for new features/ park layout?Basically Phil and myself are inspired a lot by skateboarding and each year Raf and Iberg are asking what else should we get in there, how could we improve it. We just send them shots of skateparks around the world, and ask if they can make it on snow. After that the dream comes true!
Such a rad roster of riders this year? What’s the thinking behind who you invite? It`s awesome. Legends, newcomers, ….we like to invite the people that inspired/inspires us the most and would do the best in this park. It`s made for skiers and any kind of good skier would have his place in there but we always manage to get the illest guys coming year after year.
Where do you see this event going in the future? Any big plans?Well for the moment in terms of skiing, we can`t really ask for much more, every year it`s getting better, bigger and more creative. We would like to invite more people and ski more days though for sure!
This event has definitely inspired more events to move away from traditional formats - is this something you intended to do?We are hyped on seeing events, resorts and crews opening their mind to more creative parks. If we have helped to push this then we are stoked. We have wished for years that courses would be more creative and now it`s getting there. How do you think the athletes approach this event differently to that of a normal slopestyle event for example?Hell yeah, it`s about having a good time, pushing it to the next level with the illest crew, it’s not about having a limited amount of runs and lines. Here the options are unlimited! Your mind is different; here you can be as creative as you wish!
What’s the biggest standout moment of B&E so far for you?So many great ones that I just can`t name them. How important is video and imagery to the sport of freeskiing? – Do you think a lot more athletes are moving to focus on film parts and media events such as B&E than big traditional comps? For me it`s as big as competing, I like to do both but there is a time for both. That`s the hardest part; finding a spot in the calendar to do both and do exactly what you wanna do at each place either a comp run or trick in BC/Urban. I like to think that people could do both both helps to progress on each side.Future plans for the rest of the season?Filming around Les Arcs and French Alps till 20th March, then go to Andorra before going Iceland for a week, Cran Montana??, and lot more to finish the movie segments.
