In the GREEN ROOM with Benny the Butcher

Mar 242022

As part of Buffalo’s Griselda crew as well as the Black Soprano Family collective, Benny the Butcher is a fiercely independent rapper who injects his music with tense narratives about street life. He’s also one of the newest members of the Monster Energy Music family.

In the first Green Room episode ever filmed backstage at an artist’s show, Monster Energy dives into how Benny got his musical start, the origins of Griselda, his relationship with the rest of the Monster Energy family (including Urban Necessities’ Jaysse Lopez), and much more…

He talks about the East Coast hardcore mid-'90s hip-hop that inspired him as a kid — legends like Heavy D, Nate Dogg, Tupac, and Mobb Deep. When he saw them on TV, he realized he wanted to be that.

Benny emerged as a force in the hip-hop scene at a later age than most artists in the genre, breaking out in his thirties with Tana Talk 3 (2018, a joint Griselda/Black Soprano Family recording produced by Alchemist and Griselda associate Daringer) and the Billboard-charting The Plugs I Met (2019, featuring Black Thought, Jadakiss, and Pusha T).

In 2020, he teamed up with producer Hit-Boy for Burden of Proof, which featured guest spots from Lil Wayne, Big Sean, Rick Ross, Freddie Gibbs, and more. One year later, he returned with The Plugs I Met 2, produced by Harry Fraud and featuring 2 Chainz, Fat Joe, French Montana, Jim Jones, and the ghost of Chinx.

Recently, Benny unleashed Tana Talk 4, a project he says is a hard contender for album of the year. With many critics proclaiming that it’s his best yet, the record certainly has the music world keeping its ears open for what’s next from this artist with an uncanny knack for transforming his love of the sounds of the ‘90s into present-day rap that resonates.
