Interview with Ali-A at the MXoN 2017

Oct 112017

We caught up with Monster Gaming Ambassador and one of the world's biggest YouTubers, Ali-A, at this year's Motocross of Nations. Ali came down to embrace the full MXoN experience from the racing, the Rig Riot, athlete demos and lots more!

"I had a lot of fun taking over the Monster Energy snapchat and sharing the event for people at home that couldn't be there!"

Who are you and what do you do?

My name's Alastair, better known as Ali-A. My full time job is to play video games and make videos of it, which I upload to YouTube! I've been doing it for over 8 years now and have built up an audience of over 13 million subscribers across both my YouTube channels.

What was the first video game you ever played?

I think the first video game I remember playing was probably Mario Kart on the Nintendo 64. I was so young and new to video games that I had no idea what I was doing haha Little did I know then I'd end up being really good at Mario Kart as I got older!

What did you want to be before you found gaming?

Honestly, I was really good at Maths and also really enjoyed it. I wanted to move into the world of banking and apply my Maths abilities there but it never happened, as YouTube took off just after I left Sixth Form College.

What was your first Youtube video about?

My first video, which is actually private on my channel, was me playing a game called "Super Mario Strikers Charged" on the Nintendo Wii. It was the first European Wii game to have online play and I was SUPER competitive. I stuck an old camera in front of my TV screen and recorded a video of me doing football tricks to score goals, which was actually quite hard to do!

If you hadn’t gone down the gaming route what would you have liked to test your hand at?

I would love to be a DJ. I love EDM music and have been to many big festivals around the world. I played the piano as a kid and have always had an interest in music!

If you were told you could only play one video game for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Man, this is a tough question hah I think I'd go with Animal Crossing - A real time sim game where you live in a town with loads of animals. It sounds crazy, I know, but you work towards paying off a mortgage on your house, plant trees, befriend other townsfolk + decorate your house. It's super addicting once you get into it hah

In your chill time, what Youtube videos do you watch?

Mostly vlogs really. I'm subscribed to thousands of channels on YouTube, to keep track of what everyone's doing and which videos are doing well. But when I'm relaxing and watching videos I like to watch vlogs to chill out!

Have you got anything special planned when you reach 10 million subscribers on your main channel?

I don't actually! Whenever I hit big milestones I'm always caught off guard. I really should start prepping something now - Maybe a skydive!?

What do you think of the MXoN?

MXoN was awesome - It was such a great event to spectate live, to see all the racers making huge jumps and riding side by side! I had a lot of fun taking over the Monster Energy snapchat and sharing the event for people at home that couldn't be there!
My favourite part had to be the little tricks the riders would do as they'd make the big jumps. One racer kept on throwing out what looked like a bit of paper each time he jumped, almost as a good luck charm. I have no idea how he could do that whilst also focusing on racing haha

What do you think of the Rig Riot?

The rig riot is awesome - Hundreds of people surround the Monster rig and the atmosphere is awesome as a load of Monster gear is given out. Love it!

Would you ever consider riding motocross?

I'd love to give it a go! I always loved mountain biking as a kid, although this is on another level haha I'm always down to try something new!

Any final words?

Just a thank you to everyone that's helped me grow to over 9 million Subscribers and the support Monster has given me over the years I've worked with them. Here's to 10 Million subscribers soon! :)
