The Kawasaki Racing Team behemoth that has dominated World Superbike for the last two years was presented to the press and public in the confines of Barcelona’s famous ‘Cinema Comedic’ on the main commercial thoroughfare of the city this week. There was little to smirk about as the powerhouse of double reigning champion Jonathan Rea, Tom Sykes and the Ninja ZX-10RR took to the stage for what the potent Catalan team claimed is a firm ‘reboot’ of their ambitions for an keenly anticipated FIM World Championship to come.
The first of thirteen rounds takes place in less than two weeks at the epic course of Phillip Island in Australia - a track that Rea decimated with an authoritative double twelve months ago and KRT are ready to ‘go’ again after peaking the time sheets in winter tests.
“Jonathan and Tom put the bikes on the limit all the time so we have to give them special thanks,” said Team Manager Guim Roda.
“We’ve had an incredible two years and we just keep on getting stronger,” said Rea, who could become the first rider in thirty years of WorldSBK to clinch three titles in a row. “I really think this has been the best winter testing period ever and I am feeling so good on the bike. We are keeping that step-by-step philosophy and we’re aiming for another championship. I’m so excited.”
“We’ve been very consistent for a number of years in challenging for the title and for the past two seasons I haven’t been too happy with my performance for a combination of reasons,” said Sykes who has classified in the top three of the standings each year since 2012 and clinched the number one slot with Kawasaki in 2013. “This winter I knew I needed to work in another area and manage my riding style. The ZX-10 is a very adaptable machine but I’ve needed to focus on different areas and parameters. I feel we have got there in the nick of time to find a base for Phillip Island so a big thanks to the team.”
The glamorous Kawasaki Racing Team function attracted local political dignitaries as well as a host of guests and partners and senior Kawasaki staff connected with the successful effort. At Phillip Island KRT will go into battle with strong rivals such as Yamaha, Ducati, Aprilia and Honda and vie to be top dogs once more.
