After the perfect sand bottom peelers of Snapper Rocks on the sunny Gold Coast in the previous event (won by the titanic comeback kid Owen Wright), Margaret River is an altogether different test as the world’s best surfers roll into West Australia this week for stop 2 of the WSL World Tour.
This is a contest with 3 challenging and very different contest venues. Things kicked off with heats being ran for the first time ever at North Point - an infamous tube riding and end section air machine. It’s 2’s or 10’s out there. The main event site of Margaret River is a big old granddaddy of a peak and comes into its own when the swell is macking. Big boards are the norm and all the guys reached for their big guns in the board bags for their heats at main break on day 2.
