Monster Energy muscle up for Supercars success in Townsville

Over 145,000 screaming Far North Queensland fans were treated to an all time grandstand finish as three Monster Energy-backed Supercars powered their way to solid results at the Townsville 400..

Starting from pole position Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom pushed hard all the way to the finish line only to see second place slip from his grasp by a mere 0.02s in a photo finish to Monster Energy athlete and #22 HRT driver James Courtney.

A stroke of genius from the Monster Energy-fuelled Holden Racing Team saw the crew act like lightening to a late-race safety car with Courtney brought into the pits for fresh tyres with seven laps remaining.
Returning to the pack in ninth and on the freshest rubber, JC blazed his way through the field to ultimately finish second ahead of Frosty with just centimeters in it.

“It was a great call from Robbie [Engineer] when he said to pit with 7 laps to go and when those guys in front didn't go I was like, yep it’s on here, and we pushed hard and picked them off one-by-one for P2,” said Courtney.

“I reckon that would have looked great on TV, I know I was having a ball out there!
“That’s four years in a row we’ve finished on the podium here in Townsville so that’s a great effort by HRT.”

Adopting the same strategy was Monster Energy Racing’s Cam Waters who pitted for fresh rubber on lap 63 and, from 10th, powered his way to an impressive sixth place result for Sunday’s feature race.
The weekend’s results see Frosty move up to third in the Supercars standings with JC in ninth and Waters in 18th.

Round 8 of the Supercars Championship takes crews to South East Queensland for the Ipswich Super Sprint - July 22-24.
