Derek Kolbaba waited to celebrate his birthday until he arrived in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Walla Walla, Washington, native turned 20 last week, but the real celebration took place Sunday afternoon when he rode a pair of bulls to his first ever elite televised PBR event.
Kolbaba rode Kookaburra for 89 points in the Championship Round.
Kolbaba has now recorded seven Top 10 finishes in 2016, including a pair of Top 5’s.
He’s had two big round wins. One that gave him the event in Des Moines and the other came in January when he won the 15/15 Bucking Battle, in Anaheim, California, where he rode DeNutso for a career high 89.75 points.
However, he plans to switch out the buckle on his belt with the one given to him this weekend.
“It’s going to look pretty nice,” he said, smiling on national television.
Kolbaba, who was the second rookie in as many weeks to win an elite PBR event, is now the top-ranked rookie in the world standings.
The win moved Kolbaba to seventh overall in the world.
