Most Epic 2019 Monster Moments

There were some seriously awesome surfing moments from our Monster Energy athletes in 2019. Aussie surfing favourite Owen Wright won the Tahiti Pro 2019, after a heated head to head battle with Gabriel Medina. When the horn blew and Owen became the champ, his hands didn't go skyward in celebration, they went to his face in humility, emotion and elation… to catch the tears of victory! 

‘Twas an epic year for our skateboarders too, with many wins in the ring for our Monster Energy athletes this year. One of the highlights was Nyjah Huston claiming his third back-to-back World Championship title in Men’s Street Skateboarding in São Paulo, Brazil. In a nail-biting final in front of a high-energy crowd, he claimed his sixth career title – we’re so impressed. And we can’t forget Huston’s fellow Monster Energy teammate, 11-year-old Brazilian skateboarding prodigy Rayssa Leal claimed second place in the Women’s final! 

This year Monster Energy dominated at X Games – even if we say so ourselves! One for the history books, the world-class Monster Energy athletes dominated with a total of 13 medals across Ski, Skateboarding, Snowboarding and Moto X disciplines, claiming four gold, six silver and three bronze medals. We also saw the emotional return of Canadian Monster rider Max Parrot after his battle with cancer – only for him to take home what is his sixth gold medal!

Monster Energy athletes hit the BMX track with a bang in 2019. A highlight was the famous Battle of Hastings, where BMX stars made their way to the seaside town of Hastings, England to take part – to summarise, it’s more than just a contest! A celebration of BMX including more than 3 generations of riders, Dan Lacey came through with the heat, charging the fiercest lines with style envied by most riders. Also, a massive shout out and congratulations to Jamie Bestwick for his induction into the BMX Hall Of Fame – we’re so proud to have worked with him for the last ten years! 

In Switzerland, we saw Aussie MTB legend Sam Hill take out the title at the Enduro World Series championship (backing it up for the third year in a row!). After a challenging start to 2019, Monster Energy’s golden child faced long, rocky alpine terrain… and managed to ace it! Hill crushed his nearest competitor by 7 seconds and therefore took home the championship. 

Down on the Formula One circuit, Lewis Hamilton wowed us all with yet another amazing season, setting a new all-time record with his total of 413 points. He scored his sixth career grand slam in the final race of the season, ending the season with 11 wins… they don’t call him the fastest F1 driver of his generation for no reason. 

Ken Block was back better than ever in Climbkhana 2, this time taking his Hoonitruck to China’s most dangerous road: Tianmen Mountain. He had us on the edge of our seats as he fearlessly tackled the tight bends and even drifted up a mountain… we’re shook. 

In the UFC octagon, Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal took out the crown in the UFC 244 against Nate Diaz in New York City. In front of over 20,000 people at Madison Square Garden and millions tuned in worldwide, the high-profile fight also earned Masvidal the UFC’s newly created ‘BMF’ belt for the official title of ‘Baddest Motherf***er’ on the UFC circuit… a huge moment in the octagon for 2019! 

To top it off, it was a huge year for gaming, with the highlight being The International 2019. It was one of the wildest events we’ve ever seen, not to mention the prize pool came in at over 34 million dollars. All of the Monster teams were in attendance including Team Liquid, Evil Geniuses, PSG.LGD, and Alliance – we saw some strong finishes and crazy, back and forth games! 

All in all, it was a great year and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2020!​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
