#mylid 2018 Alex Marquez: Firing for first

Jun 162018

There is a corner of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya that burns bright blue. EG 0,0 Marc VDS rider Alex Marquez is one of the fiercest home hopes for the Catalan masses at the annual and anticipated stop at the Mediterranean venue. The 22 year old usually stands out for the fans. Not only thanks to his speed that puts the former Moto3 World Champion at the front of Moto2 but also a distinct lid design that has some amusing origins.

“One day I went out with my friends and for a joke we dressed up and I was a cowboy,” #73 smiles. “It is a look and an idea that somehow became part of my fan club: the ‘Blue Gunners’. I didn't really want a cowboy on the helmet but we worked on a design of a bullet coming out of a gun and I’ve had that theme since 2015.”

Marquez has moved around the bullet drawing for his Shoei and for the better part of his six years in the world championship paddock. Together with the ‘73’ and a colour preference it has become part of his identity in Grand Prix; a scene where the ‘Marquez’ family name has become so prominent.

“I like lines, so we played on that with the design,” he says. “Before we used to draw the bullet like it was entering the helmet and now it is like it is passing it. We have a lot of black on the helmet for Monster Energy and blue as well that we changed this year to make a bit lighter so the helmet was not so dark. Blue is my colour and something visual for the fan club.”

He might be working to conquer the Moto2 category and follow in elder brother Marc’s footsteps to win both support class titles before considering MotoGP, but Alex has time to contemplate some of the finer points of his image and the lid plays a part in that. “It’s important to me and I also like it,” he says. “I sit down and talk with the designer – David Mata – and we work on making something that looks just right.”
