Roots of Rock
During the 1950s and 1960s, India was pioneering Indian rock groups under Bhaskar Menon (who was president of Gramophone's company in India.) Although he was the leading promoter of what was known as Western pop music in India, he did promote Indian bands that would become influential to the biggest bands in the world such as The Beatles, The Yardbirds, The Doors, and many more.
Early pioneers of Indian rock during the 1960s and the 1970s The Flintstone, The Beat-X, The Thunderbirds, and WAFWOT, and The Mystiks to name a few. Aside from having some successful releases, these bands played on the college and university circuits for quite some time. Some artists (such as Usha Iyer) went on to cover popular Western songs, which was popular until the 1980s.
The Passion of Music in India
In addition to the rest of the world, India is incredibly passionate about its music. Indian rock found a much larger platform in Bollywood film, which eloquently blended both art forms together to create a genre of creativity that audiences throughout the world cannot get enough of.
