Rookie Ocon and the Silver Arrows lead the test miles

Jul 142016

While Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are busy gearing up for the next round of F1 battle at the Hungarian Grand Prix in just under a fortnight, the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team were back in action at Silverstone locking in vital testing miles.

There was however a fresh face in the cockpit – namely development driver, 19-year old Esteban Ocon. Formerly a Euro F3 and GP3 series champion, Ocon was hard at work with the Silver Arrows, gathering vital aerodynamic data at the wheel of the all conquering F1 W07 Hybrid, as part of the final in-season test of 2016.

The time sheets were equally impressive too. On both days, Ocon was only bested by permanent Ferrari driver and 2007 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen. “I felt really comfortable in the car today. We were able to do 139 laps and finished all of our planned programmes,” said Ocon.

“We started the day with some aerodynamic tests which went well. Then, in the afternoon, I was able to improve my driving with every lap - especially using the soft tyres. I am really thankful for the opportunity the team has given me. It's really allowed me to learn a lot.”
