The fifth round of the Monster Energy TRP Distributors SA MX National Championship took place at Maritzburg Club in a warm Pietermaritzburg this past weekend. Maritzburg is a club that has a very long history in South African MX and the competitors knew they could expect a great event. With only a few rounds left in the championship, you could feel the tension in the air as competitors need to get as many points on the board as possible.
In the Premier MX1 class it was multiple SA champion Husqvarna Racing’s Richard van der Westhuizen that showed once again what he is made of. In practice the track had already developed deep ruts and as the day progressed, the track continued to get very rough and that is where we could see Richard’s years of experience as he carved his way through the rough terrain for each lap.
Once again Monster Energy and Tintswalo Out of Africa Yamaha’s Tristan Purdon kept things consistent taking 2nd overall and maintaining his current points lead, followed by team mate David Goosen was right behind him with a solid 3rd overall.
With Maddy Malan out for the rest of the season, there was renewed interest in the Premier MX2 class to see who would step up their challenge for the lead. An incredible battle between the top 7 riders took place over the 2 heats and it wasn’t until the very end of heat two that anyone had an idea which way it would go. David Goosen got 1-4 for first overall, Kerim Fitz-Gerald got 4-2 for second overall and Richard van der Westhuizen took 8-1 for third overall finishing off a great day for him.
Round 6 heads to the Free State and will take place at Holeshot Harry’s in Harrismith on 2 September.
