#SPANISHGP: Podium lockout and five minutes with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport CEO Toto Wolff

May 142018

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Team made it a one-two finish at the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend with a trademark commanding performance.

Headed up by Lewis Hamilton's 64th career win – his sixth at the legendary Barcelona based circuit – the performance was executed with precision, style, and blistering speed. Team mate Valtteri Bottas completed the dream result for the Silver Arrows, by bouncing back from the disappointment of narrowly loosing the win in Azerbaijan, to boost across the line in second place.

The result marks the 36th 1-2 victory for the Silver Arrows since Mercedes re-entered Formula One as a works team in 2010. Leading the way from the pit wall since being appointed a managing partner of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport in 2013 has been Toto Wolff. In a change of pace, we briefly caught up with the 46 year old Austrian, to get to know the man behind the Silver Arrows…

"It feels like a long time since we had a 1-2 finish, so there's definitely a measure of relief in how we asserted ourselves today."

Congratulations on the result, how was that from your perspective?

It feels like a long time since we had a 1-2 finish, so there's definitely a measure of relief in how we asserted ourselves today. But we know as well that this was a good circuit for us and the temperatures fell in our favour as well. So we need to stay calm and humble, because it can be a different ball game again next time round. We will savour the result this evening - but our thoughts are already turning to Monaco, to the struggles we had there last year and to how we can make sure not to suffer a repeat.

Away from the track how has life changed since becoming a dad?

It's got even better. We already have two fantastic teenage children and our baby boy Jack has added another wonderful part to our family.

What are the best bits? And the worst? And do you change the nappies?

I changed the first nappy - but probably not my fair share since then! I love spending time with Jack, seeing him grow, starting to walk and talk. And seeing Susie as a mother as well; it blows me away.

What do you do in your spare time; any hobbies?

There isn't so much spare time. My life is 24/7 motorsport in this job. But you need to take time out as well to recharge otherwise the batteries burn out. I'm interested in design and architecture -- I enjoy mountain biking -- and skiing in the winter. I'm an Austrian, after all!

"I don't remember any lows -- there were tough moments, but those are the times that made us better. You need them if you want to grow."

Do you collect anything?

Yes, classic cars and watches.

Tell us more, what’s in the car collection?

I have a few - the collection is growing slowly because it's a real passion for me, so I want to do it the right way. There are some Mercedes - and then some others I probably shouldn't talk about...

When's the last time you treated yourself and what did you buy?

An e-mountain bike from Rotwild, at my house in the mountains.

What's the toughest part of your job?

It's the travelling, without a doubt. You have to be mindful about the hours in the plane, in the hotels, keep yourself grounded and sleep properly. Otherwise it gets the better of you.

What's the highest point of your career so far? And the lowest?

The highest point was probably 2014 -- the first championship with Mercedes, the 1-2-3 in the Austrian GP and Susie's Friday tests for Williams. That was special. I don't remember any lows -- there were tough moments, but those are the times that made us better. You need them if you want to grow. Like we say in the team: when it stings, it sticks. And we come back even stronger from our setbacks.

What will F1 be like in 10 years time?

Fast, spectacular, high-tech, full of emotion, competition and incredible teams. And thriving, I hope.
