Spotlight on Frederico Morais: the Portuguese assassin talks heading home for Peniche

Oct 202017

Frederico ‘Kikas’ Morais is having a year to remember. After a string of solid results including a 2nd place at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa and some head turning power performances, he now leads the race for the Rookie of the year. Last week Kikas stepped back into Europe and the WSL elite World Tour vest for the first time as established World Tour member. Sure Fred has done a few events as a wildcard but now 'Steady Freddy’ is one of the big guns. The Quik Pro France in Hossegor offered up big waves and long walls and Kikas revved the crowd up in the early rounds with his now trademark elongated carves and monster hammer blows on the end sections.

We sat down with the Portuguese Pro and got some quick words about his year to date:

You're having an excellent rookie year. How was that first European event in France for you?

France was really fun! Love Hossegor, it’s such a cool surf town with amazing waves. I’ve been going there since I was really young for the junior comps so I’m pretty familiar with the place. We had some fun waves this year, definitely not the result I was looking for but it was great to hang and surf the French beaches.

Next event: Peniche. You've competed here but always as a wildcard. As a full CT surfer does it feel any different?

Well now it’s different because the points are really important but pressure wise I don’t feel any different from the other years. Just want to enjoy myself, get some good waves and be grateful for all this, just being able to surf at home being part of the tour and feel all the support, that’s the most important.

What does the forecast look like for Peniche?

The forecast is looking pretty good, so let’s hope it stays like this.

How do you deal with all the attention and crazy Portuguese crowds in Peniche?

It’s amazing to feel all the support, it just shows how passionate we Portuguese are. It´s an amazing crowd, couldn’t ask for a better one!

What has been your favorite thing this whole first year so far on the Tour?

Best thing by far is being able to live the dream I’ve worked really hard to achieve, so just being on the world tour is my favorite thing
