Summer Punk Volyně is a hardcore / punk festival on the picturesque 1920s swimming pool in the town of Volyně, South Bohemia. And what can you expect? Great bands from all over the world, view from the pool directly on stage and unmistakable atmosphere! We talked about the festival with organizer Šimon. Read the interview and watch the aftermovie to get a vibe how we enjoyed it last year.
Hi Šimon, how did you come to the idea of organizing the festival and why in Volyně?
My colleague Ondra came up with the idea years ago, as I was arranging some concerts there and he called me to ask if I wanna try to organize a smaller festival. Before I had a chance to go for a drink so we can discuss it, he already arranged a date and three bands so there was no turning back. We were both young and green, but we survived somehow. Eventually we dared to to invite foreign bands and here we go - in a few days, the 7th edition is upon us, time really flies! Why Volyně? The historic swimming pool has its unique vibe. Since the first moments it was clear to us that we want the festival to happen here!
How would you sum up the festival for the people who do not know it?
I will repeat myself, but the atmosphere of the swimming pool is unique. The sun is shining, you can get into the water with beer while still being able to see the podium and enjoy the bands. Moreover, I think that we are still "family" kind of the event, the queues are short and everything on the site is just stone's throw away. A big advantage is certainly the fact that the entire crew are longtime friends from school or sports clubs and we do the it mainly for fun.
What artists do you recommend?
I am personally looking forward to seeing my long-time German buddies from Itchy. They are a big band in the home country with thousands of fans attending their gigs, yet they are still looking around in Czech Republic. I hope they are going to be a dark horse of the whole programme. From local names, I definitely don’t wanna miss Hopes, which I have not seen for a long time. Me an Ondra, we really give our best in planning the whole programme, so every invited band promises a great deal of musical "mischief"!
What can you do at the festival, in addition to listening to all those bands?
In addition to the bathing I have mentioned several times, there will be several nonprofit organisations that you can come to support at their stalls, you can go to the Monster Chill Zone, check out the festival merch, have a tank beer, or make a short trip to nearby Hoštice, where the famous Slunce seno movie was filmed. See you this weekend!
