This Way In - 2019 Billabong Pipe Masters

Dec 082019

Location, Location, Location

Returning to Oahu’s North Shore each December is a tireless tradition. Like Christmas morning for a kid. White sand beaches and lush backdrops, swaying palm trees and perfect surf. There’s a reason they call it the 7-Mile Miracle. Add the drama of the final contest of the WSL Championship Tour season, held at Pipeline, the most photographed and captivating wave on earth, and we’re edging toward perfection. We keep wondering if it’s going to get old. I guess we’ll have to wait another year.

The 2019 Billabong Pipe Masters runs from December 8 to December 20. Hawaii is two hours behind the US West Coast, so finish your morning meetings and tune into to cheer on the Monster team!

Monster Threats

Filipe Toledo: While historically Filipe hasn’t done well at Pipe, he’s got a world title within reach this year. If that doesn’t inspire a little extra send, what will?

Seth Moniz: Seth grew here, the rest flew here. Hometown advantage is sure to help 2019’s likely rookie of the year.

Owen Wright: Remember his win at massive Teahupo’o this year? Expect Owen to strap on the helmet and go for broke in similar conditions.

Griffin Colapinto: He’s a fan favorite, and not just for his hilarious post-heat interviews. Watch Griffin show his range at heavy Pipe.

Yago Dora: He’s often compared to Gerry Lopez sooo….that helps.

Conner Coffin: When Conner’s in the water at Pipe, he lines up with his family’s beach house. Familiarity breeds comfort.

Frederico Morais: He’s back on tour full-time next year and has nothing to lose. Dangerous!

Three Questions

Can Filipe win the world title? Totally. There are all kinds of scenarios since there are five horses in the race, but basically he needs to do really well while Gabriel Medina and Italo Ferreira fair poorly.

What else is happening in Hawaii? Frederico Morais won the QS 10,000 at Haleiwa and the QS season, and Tyler Wright finished runner up at Honolua Bay after not competing for a year and a half. A good season for the Monster team!

How’s the forecast look? Plenty of swell on the way! Look for a dramatic world title showdown at classic Pipe. What else could you ask for?
