TWO DUDES FULFILLING THEIR DREAMS THAT'S WHAT LA BANDA BASTÖN IS ABOUT

Mar 092017

At the end of the 90's an original duet from Valle de Santo Domingo, BC Sur came to Mexico City in search of a promising future in the Mexican hip hop scene, currently La Banda Bastön, founding members Anibal Lavana, aka "Muelas de Gallo", and Gonzalo Muñoz, aka “DJ Zupreeme” have managed to consolidate themselves as an influence in the hip hop and rap community not only nationally but also internationally.

After four years of hard work, and with two studio albums under their belts, La Banda Bastön will release “Luces Fantasma” in 2017. Under the seal of Homegrown Entertainment. The album features 18 tracks, several collaborations with artists such as Denise Gutiérrez, McKlopedia Mikman, Alvaro Díaz, Kap G, Smoky, Alemán and lyrically, speaks of love, social protest, and lifestyle.

The music industry constantly evolves at such a rapid pace yet La Banda Bastön assures us they will continue to keep up the pace. Their objectives are very clear, Rap is their means of communication and they are not afraid to use it.

WE ARE BEST FRIENDS SINCE KINDERGARTEN WE HAVE GROWN UP TOGETHER, YOU HAVE TO TRUST SOMEONE WHO HAS LIVED AS YOU BECAUSE IS AN EXTENSION OF YOURSELF

How do you consider the evolution of the band, what are the differences "Luces Fantasma" has shown from previous productions?

It has a lot of attention to detail, in each track we focus on the lyrics of the song to take it to the limit. We record multiple songs and in the end we chose the best because we believe that they feel good together, complement each other and coexist in the right way.

Why did you choose ¨Luces Fantasma” (Phantom lights) as the album´s title?

It has to do with the distinct layers of oneself, what lies underneath all of us, what is there but you can’t see, one’s intentions, feelings, ego. What lurks, even though we try to hide it the nature of what we hide. It is about coexisting with these layers in the right way.

When it comes to collaboration, how far does it go and what is the limit of creation?

We often let things happen, either making a song from scratch or suggesting an idea that we've been working on individually. When the inspiration comes to you, it does not matter what the source is. The studio is a laboratory where we experiment with different ingredients until finding the correct formula, when we have guests we include them in this dynamic and we seek to connect with them.

we are only two dudes fulfilling their dream.

What is first, the music or the lyrics?

“Neither, first it is the idea. Sometimes I have an idea of the lyrics and I share it with Zupremme, who comes up with a beat or vice versa, the truth is that there is no scrupulous or mechanical method on the matter” said Muelas de Gallo.

What is special about "Me porto bien" to make you decide that it would be the first single?

It's a fresh song, we had not done a song like that, despite having other party songs "Me gustas", "No me porto bien" is a clear example of what I'm telling you, it was a tune in the head, then a rhythm, then the lyrics and then the single of the album.

The artists offer and exhibit their experiences through different platforms, you do it through the sound, but as art can touch on other senses... What would "Luces Fantasma" smell like?

Wow! It may smell like partying, learning, relaxation, fury, and carne asada tacos. LOL

How do you choose the song titles?

This is usually the hardest part, sometimes we have songs without name and we listen to them until something comes to mind. It is very occasional that songs already have a name when we are recording them.

"WHEN YOU REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO SIGNS IT IS AS IF SOMEONE WERE SPEAKING FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION, AND WHEN THE MESSAGE IS DECIPHERED IS WHEN IT IS CONVERTED INTO A SONG..."

In contrast to most Hip Hop bands, what distinguishes La Banda Band from the rest?

We take it very seriously, we do not want to be a fashion group but a worship group, a group that marks history, we know that our legacy is our songs so we take our time and give them love. We try to supersede our previous effort each time we get into the studio, this is what keeps us fresh and above all with a desire to re-enter the arena to offer the best we have.

How strong is the impact and the responsibility to know that just by doing your work and what you love, you become a benchmark of an industry?

We do not think about it, we do what we want and that is the victory, and with that we feel satisfied. What people think, is their responsibility, in that sense we are still innocent, we are only two dudes fulfilling our dreams.

How do you perceive the future of Mexican Hip Hop and rap?

Very promising, we are in a moment where it is growing a lot, there are very good groups everywhere, the public is growing especially, in the future we must have our own radio stations, television channels, industry. I think it's best for all of us who have worked hard in this culture.
