They say that you should “work smarter, not harder,” but sometimes, you don’t have a choice. If you’re Tyler Wright, for example, winner of this week’s Roxy Pro Gold Coast, you had to grind gears and leapfrog obstacles from round 1 all the way to the finals. Her biggest road blocks came in the form of Carissa Moore and Stephanie Gilmore, who between them hold nine world titles. Tyler was unconcerned. Her hustle, determination and powerful rail game proved too much for the former champs, favorites to take out the event. Tyler went on to defeat Courtney Conlogue (2015 world title runner up) in the final, 14.67 to 10.94. By winning the first event of the CT season, Tyler will wear the gold jersey going into Bells Beach — No. 1 in the world. She’s got a long road ahead and she’ll have a target on her back, but it’s nothing a little more hard work can’t handle.
