Maverick Viñales at the 2017 Phillip Island test

Viñales continues foreboding MotoGP pre-season form after Aus outing

Feb 172017

Initial tests for the 2017 MotoGP season have involved laps and work around the tight twists of Valencia, the angular turns and sweeps of Sepang and now the high speed, picturesque curves of Phillip Island but the outcome has largely been the same. Movistar Yamaha’s Maverick Viñales maintained his virulent streak of pace and form to emerge from the second official fixture of the year at the top of the timing screens once again.

The MotoGP grid encountered pleasant if typically breezy conditions at the world-renowned racetrack in Australia and a climate quite distinct from the unpredictable weather often seen at the scene of the Grand Prix in October. Several birthdays marked the three day affair with Valentino Rossi hitting the wise old age of thirty-eight and world champion Marc Marquez also blowing out the candles to toast his twenty-fifth year.

‘It was a very positive test for us,’ understated Maverick, who had also worked on preservation of rear tyre grip and can consider his efforts a success. ‘We came here to try many items and now we got things clear and we already know which set-up we can start using in Qatar. We did a lot of work and I‘m happy about that. Today we concentrated mainly on the race pace and I‘m satisfied, but we‘re still able to improve.’

‘The priority for our day was to do a long run and get some more information for Honda,’ the Englishman said. ‘We managed that in the end and we were quite pleased with how it all went considering we also had a small issue.’
