Weekend Recap: October 9 - 10

Oct 112021

Sunday’s event, officially known as the Formula 1 Rolex Turkish Grand Prix 2021, took place throughout the weekend at Istanbul Park in Tuzla, Istanbul, with the race covering fifty-eight laps of the 3.317-mile fourteen-turn circuit. Driver Valtteri Bottas guided his Mercedes AMG F1 W12 E Performance Silver Arrow to a convincing victory in Istanbul and his teammate and reigning F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton placed fifth in the tricky wet-and-dry conditions. In the terrific fight for the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship, Hamilton is a mere six points out of the championship lead with the very next Grand Prix set for the United States and the Circuit of the Americas in two weeks’ time.

The world-renowned Spa-Francorchamps racing venue hosted the Benelux round over the past weekend and on what was his 30th birthday, Monster Energy ace Andreas Bakkerud was crowned FIA European Rallycross Champion for the third time in his career – and the first time in the headlining Euro RX1 category. Bakkerud and title adversary Fabien Pailler fought for supremacy all season long, and the pair entered the dramatic final showdown in Belgium separated by just a single point. A fantastic and hard-earned lights-to-flag victory. Bakkerud said of his achievements: “This is absolutely crazy. I owe ESmotorsport a big ‘thank you’ for giving me the opportunity to compete in Euro RX1 this year – it really didn’t look like that would be happening before the start of the season. Everybody in the team has done such a great job. I’m very proud of them all, and there’s more to come. Hopefully, we have an even brighter future together.”

The MXGP of France round of the FIM Motocross World Championship took place over the weekend at the fabled Circuit Georges Filhol at Lacapelle-Marival, France. Racing to an excellent runner-up finish in the premiere MX class was Romain Febvre of the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team. In doing so, the Frenchman now finds himself a mere six points out of the MXGP World Championship lead. Fourth overall at the MXGP of France fell to Jeremy Seewer of the Monster Energy Yamaha MXGP Factory Team. In the MX2 battle at the MXGP of France, Monster Energy Yamaha MX2 Team riders Maxime Renaux placed third overall, the podium result pushing the French rider to an astonishing 91-point lead in the fight for the MX2 World Championship. The MXGP contingent will now move on to Spain and next Sunday’s MXGP of Spain.

Monster Energy’s Jack Moir claims his first championship with his 2021 Overall Elite Men Championship title in the Enduro World Series (EWS) in Scotland last weekend. In the Vittoria EWS Tweed Valley race, the 27-year-old from Morisset Park, Australia, battled injury and adverse conditions to finish the race in fourth place and become the new EWS Men’s World Champion with 4520 points in overall rankings.
