World RX 2018 is go!

Apr 152018

The wait is finally over. It’s time to grab a much needed dose of flames and horsepower because World RX 2018 has launched.

Bursting into life in Barcelona after a long and tense winter, the FIA World Rallycross Championship celebrates its fourth season as a card-carrying FIA sanctioned world series this year, and in trademark style, it couldn’t have been a more dramatic start.

A weekend of opposites saw rain, dirt, and then haze and sunshine in Barcelona threw every challenge possible at the championship’s competitors. It was only after the dust settled on Sunday just before the event’s final that a potential glimpse of a winner emerged.

After the final flag Johan Kristoffersson just missed out on the top step of the podium, with team mate Petter Solberg – who had dominated the weekend prior to the final – cruelly forced into the tyre barriers at turn one by Matthias Ekström. A post race inquiry into first corner smash then disqualified Ekström from the race, and stripped him of the win. This bumped Johan into first, Petter to fifth, and PSRX Volkswagen Sweden to the top of the tables.

After the podium Johan explained: “In the final I chased Matthias as much as I could – we came pretty close on the merge on the joker on the last lap. But we can be very happy with the result. All of our testing before this on the new car has been in wet or rainy conditions, so from that perspective it’s a success too. I’m super disappointed for Petter, it looked a complete mess at the start from what I could see. We will analyse the data and video footage and come back stronger in Portugal for sure!”

So with round one in the can, what’s in store for the rest of the year?

Racing in the wheel tracks of the new-to-2017 Cape Town season finale, are two legendary venues. Silverstone and the Circuit of the Americas are the world beating circuits to dig up their dirt and make space for rallycross.

Not just that, but increased manufacturer involvement from different teams sees a 15 strong lineup of drivers boasting factory machinery all straining at the brakes ready to snatch the championship spoils away from PSRX Volkswagen Sweden’s Petter Solberg and Johan Kristoffersson.
