World RX 2019: What’s In Store

Apr 062019

Under the bright lights and blistering heat of Yas Marina, the 2019 FIA World Rallycross Championship finally dropped its season start flag. But what’s in store, and where is it heading?

It’s been a tense winter since the championship wrapped in Cape Town last year. Manufacturer switch-outs, electrically charged questions, and debates over circuits were just a few of the tense topics that dominated the off-season debates. Thankfully as April rolled around and the confirmed Supercar teams hit the paddock in Abu Dhabi, the talk stopped, and then action amped-up.

A purpose built course awaited at Yas Marina, and set the tone for what could arguably one of the most exciting and divisive seasons in the history of World RX. In all, the action will be contested over a feature packed 10 rounds, spanning from Barcelona to Benelux and Sweden to South Africa.

What’s more, a fresh squad launched into the paddock - the Monster Energy RX Cartel - led by Andreas Bakkerud and Liam Doran. Read more about them here. The duo came out swinging, looking good for a double podium, until a heavy impact in Q3 eliminated Andreas Bakkerud from the weekend. Undeterred Liam burst through the pack from the back row in both the semi-final and final to lock in a third place podium position.

“I want this more than anything,” Liam told us. “I was sat on the back row in both races and just drove two good six lap races and picked people off as I went. This result means more than people can understand. I’m going in to Barcelona knowing I can do it, and with a little bit more confidence.

“Andreas and I get on, and work together, so well. He was spotting for me in the semi and finals - theres nothing like having a driver in your corner on the radio, he knows exactly the right calls to make. I think he got me here today; and I think with this team and car we are going to be a very strong force to be reckoned with. Determination to never give up is everything.”

Round two goes live in Barcelona on the 27th of April, in the meantime check out the shots from the RX Cartel’s trackside shooters…
