Gallery: Roma and Currie make tracks at Dakar 2019

The legendary Rally Dakar wrapped last week, and Nani Roma, Casey Currie and the Monster Energy Can-Am Team rocked the savage 3,100 mile route from start to finish.

While Nani delighted his team and fans by charging to a second place podium in the Car category, Casey made an incredible debut at the world’s toughest off-road race; finishing fourth overall in the Side-by-Side category, as well as picking up the Rookie of the Dakar award.

Driving as part of the newly-signed Monster Energy Can-Am Team Casey lined-up alongside Dakar veterans Gerrard Farres and Reinaldo Varela; who finished second and third in the Side-By-Side class respectively also.

Nani’s podium in the car category marked his first major success at the Dakar since he won the event in 2014; and also marks a fantastic return to form for the Spanish ace, after a high speed accident on stage three of last year’s Dakar left him with head and neck injuries.

After the podium ceremony in Lima, Nani said: “The Dakar is always a super hard rally - and this year has been tough… really tough. There’s been a lot of stress every day this year though. A lot of sand, a lot of dunes. It was only 10 days this year, but it actually feels like 20 days! For the entire rally you have the sea quite close to the dunes, and that created a lot of turbulence, and very tricky sand that kept changing. We knew that going into the rally though. But for me after 24 Dakars this was definitely one of the most tough events!

“You work for months and months to prepare for the Dakar, and the focus levels are so high. When I had the accident on the third day of the Dakar last year and had to stop, it was incredibly tough for me. Especially when you know straight away that you have to wait a full year before you can try again. This year I just tried to drive as consistently as possible and not make any mistakes. I did make a couple [of mistakes] along the way but that is part of the game. Overall I am really happy!”

Casey added: “Wow is all I can say; racing at the Dakar was such an incredible experience. Fourth overall and Rookie of the Dakar - I’m super proud of my team and all of their effort to get us to this point. Thankyou to everyone for all your positive works and messages throughout these last two weeks. It really helps on the days when things aren’t going the best. This was literally ten tough days of racing on the roughest terrain on the planet. The desert was all types of new terrain for me - the dunes were amazing, beautiful and dangerous at the same time. The Dakar really is the pinnacle of off-road racing!”
