One of the very first fighters in MMA history to earn the accolade of “Double Champ”, Dan Henderson’s name is rarely left out of any conversation that revolves around wrestling and UFC greats. Dan was a phenomenal athlete in high school, winning multiple championships in both greco-roman and freestyle wrestling. College (at both Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State University) was no different as Dan was the university national champion in 1991, 1993 and 1994. He was also the national champ at the senior level in 1993, 1994 and 1997. Dan also wrestled for the U.S. in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. Dan made his MMA debut in 1997 at The Brazil Open Lightweight Tournament. This was a one-night-only tournament, and Dan would ultimately rise to the occasion to win the tournament with two very rapid finishes. Dan’s next tournament was at UFC 17, and he would come away with the win (despite a broken jaw) once again, fighting twice in the same night. Next, Dan Henderson would compete in the Ring of Kings tournament that spanned from 1999 to 2011. There was no weight class, and Dan was consistently outweighed by 30 lbs. He would go on to win this tournament as well. Dan began competing in PRIDE Fighting Championships in 2000 and would be the very first fighter to hold titles in two different weight classes, simultaneously, in a major MMA organization. Much of Dan’s storied career would take place in the UFC, and he would eventually coach a team on The Ultimate Fighter in its ninth season, opposite Michael Bisping. Dan knocked out Michael in the season finale and earn the “Knockout of The Night” in what would come to be considered as one of the greatest KOs in the history of the sport. Dan went on to compete in Strikeforce and go 4-1 with the organization. It was here that he would defeat Fedor Emelianenko on July 30, 2011. Dan returned to the UFC in November of 2011 and started off his return with a win against Mauricio Rua. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on July 5th, 2018.
