ROOKIE LIFE: VALENTIN GUILLOD CHATS ABOUT MAKING HIS WAY IN MXGP

Apr 262016

Third place in the 2015 MX2 World Championship and a flamboyant winner of three Grands Prix; 23 year old Swiss Valentin Guillod then endured a rough off-season where he split with his Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha team and found solace with Kemea Yamaha for his first tilt at the premier class of the FIM Motocross World Championship. Guillod might have been primed for valid assault on the 2016 MX2 crown but through reaching the age ceiling was obliged to hop out of the category and into MXGP…and does so with Yamaha factory support and the guidance of ever-present ex-GP winner and world champ Yves Demaria at his side. Feeling his way into the new challenge and with the achievement of brandmate Romain Febvre lingering overhead (the Frenchman won MXGP at his first attempt) Guillod is wading through a different experience of Grand Prix. And we wanted him to chat about it… A handful of races into your first year in MXGP and you’ve nestled into the fringes of the top ten. Is that where you expected to be or is it a bit frustrating? A bit frustrating because my know my level and pace in practice and when I arrive at the races I’m not even at 50% of my speed. I getting quite stressed at the GPs but I almost expected this because if you look at my last two seasons then I don’t hit my level at the first three or four rounds. I knew this would happen and I’m working to make it better.  Is part of the stress to do with the new class, new opposition, new team, new bike? Yes, I think so. I think it contributes to the general feeling at a race. As people know I changed teams in the winter and I think I was quite lucky that the whole ‘story’ started in mid-October when I was racing supercross. I had to stop training for SX because my head wasn`t in the right place and I knew I risked a big crash. Luckily Yamaha were pushing for me to find a solution and we found a home at Kemea with factory support and that was really good. Kemea gave me everything I needed to work towards good results. The luck came through that fix arriving in November and not in January. If it happened later then it would have been very complicated this season.
