World SBK watch out: Rea stays with a Ninja for two more years

May 122016

For his growing fanbase and Kawasaki fans, especially those in Great Britain, the news that World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea will stay on the works Ninja ZX-10R for 2017 and 2018 sounds a exciting as the howl from the title winning racebike itself. For his rivals in the FIM WorldSBK pack they will be green that JR is staying ‘Green’.

Ominous signs indeed for the series that reaches the sixth fixture of thirteen this weekend with the Fassi Malaysian Round taking place in the cooker that is Sepang. Rea, the defending number one after a dominant first term in 2015 with Kawasaki that involved 14 wins from 26 outings, has still to be dislodged from the podium in 2016 on the new ZX and the combination had proved irresistible so far.

Since the beginning of ’15 Rea has only missed the podium 3 times from 36 races and heads the current standings by 35 points from Ducati’s Chaz Davies. “It is clear that our objectives and way of working are very well matched so it makes perfect sense to extend this for two more seasons,” the Irishman and father of two said.

Unless Kawasaki dangle a factory KX450F in front of the motocross-mad Rea then it looks like World Superbike is going to be terrorised by the might of ‘65’ and the green menace for a while longer.
