F1: Lewis Hamilton Vs Will Smith

Nov 262018

Lewis Hamilton revealed the unconventional approach he used to win the final race of the 2018 FIA Formula One World Championship; and it’s not what you might think.

While other drivers were concentrating on strategy, diet, and making final tweaks to their setups, Lewis was taken hostage by Hollywood actor Will Smith. It was all part of a short comedy video filmed for fun on Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Team social media accounts. The video starts off with Smith apologising to the five time Formula One World Champion; having taped him to a chair.

The staged scene also shows the film star Smith dressed in Lewis's racesuit and pretending to head to the grid to race Lewis’ title winning Silver Arrow race car in the Abu Dhabi GP, saying "you've already won" and "no one will know the difference!” The clip was shot just prior to Lewis taking to the grid in the season finale, where he converted his pole position into his 11th victory of the season in awesome style.

Lewis said: "It has been an unconventional weekend. On Saturday morning, I was filming something with FIFA and Sony, and then doing stuff with Will. Will is the original hype man and he brings a lot of energy. He is really like a big brother to me.

“We were doing filming, literally 10 minutes before I got in the car, which I never do because that is the period of time where I am usually getting ready. So, going into the race, I was like 'jeez, I have completely changed my pattern'. I got a great start and then after that it was standard. "I expect nothing but perfection so that is what we were striving for as a team. I wanted to finish on a high.

“This year has been a very uplifting experience for me. I wanted to come here and make sure that I left no stone unturned; the team did an exceptional job all year long, so I really wanted to deliver for them and end the season off strong.

“I think I was able to do that and I'm really grateful for all the support throughout the entire year. I've been able to be a better me all year long and I will continue to try to work on that and try to work on the energy that I'm projecting to people. I had a lot of fun in the car today - I love driving, I loved driving every minute today and I hope I have many more days to go.”
